Between them, these two string experts have played the gamut of styles including jazz, rock, folk, blues, country and bossa nova. The tunes on the CD, which was recorded at Poachers Pantry in NSW, include uncredited compositions that can be identified with James Taylor, Dave Brubeck, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Miles Davis.
Eclectic? Yes, yet the duo don’t attempt to
emulate the originals but dig into the themes
and add their own touch of originality. TakeFive might have been written for guitars rather
than piano and alto sax, while the cuatro
featured on Light My Fire takes the tune into a
natural Brazilian setting. The Caribbean
centred St. Thomas gives Col Bernau a
chance to exercise his mandolin chops,
followed by Miles Davis’ All Blues which has
an insistent bass line and some swinging
guitar chords.
Devotees of guitars and music fans who
enjoy having fun with some well-known rock
and jazz tunes will relish this recording over
several plays.
